Electric Skateboard Maintenance Guide: How to Keep Your Board Running Like New

A well-maintained electric skateboard lasts significantly longer and performs better than one that's neglected. Most maintenance tasks are simple and take just a few minutes — here's everything you need to know to keep your board in top shape.

Battery Care: The Most Important Maintenance Task

The battery is the most expensive component on your electric skateboard and the one most affected by how you treat it. Follow these guidelines to maximize battery lifespan:

  • Don't fully drain the battery regularly. Lithium-ion batteries last longer when you avoid running them to 0%. Stop riding when the remote signals low battery and recharge promptly.
  • Don't leave it at 100% for extended periods. If you're storing the board for more than a few days, charge to around 50–60% rather than leaving it fully charged.
  • Recharge every 1–3 months during storage. Batteries self-discharge over time. If the board sits unused for months, the battery can drop to a critically low level that permanently reduces capacity. Check and top up the charge regularly during periods of infrequent use.
  • Charge at room temperature. Avoid charging in very cold or very hot environments — both reduce charging efficiency and can damage cells over time.
  • Unplug after charging. Most modern chargers cut off automatically when full, but it's still good practice to unplug once charging is complete rather than leaving it connected indefinitely.
  • Use the manufacturer's charger. Third-party chargers with incorrect voltage or amperage can damage the battery management system.

Wheels: Inspection and Rotation

  • Check wheels regularly for wear. Uneven wear on hub motor wheels is common — the driven wheels wear faster than the non-driven ones.
  • Rotate wheels periodically. Swapping front and rear wheels extends overall wheel life and keeps handling balanced.
  • Inspect for cracks or chunks. Damaged wheels affect ride quality and braking. Replace any wheel that shows significant damage.
  • Keep wheels clean. Remove debris, hair, and grit that can get caught in the wheel bearings or motor housing.

Bearings

  • Clean bearings every few months or more frequently if you ride in wet or dusty conditions. Dirty bearings increase rolling resistance and wear faster.
  • Apply bearing lubricant after cleaning — a small drop of speed cream or skateboard bearing oil is sufficient. Avoid over-lubricating.
  • Replace bearings if they feel rough, make grinding noises, or don't spin freely after cleaning.

Trucks and Hardware

  • Check all bolts and screws regularly. Vibration from riding loosens hardware over time. Use a skate tool to check that all mounting bolts, truck bolts, and wheel nuts are snug.
  • Inspect truck bushings. Bushings wear out and affect turning response. Replace them if they feel cracked, compressed, or unresponsive.
  • Adjust truck tightness to your preference. Tighter trucks = more stability at speed. Looser trucks = more maneuverability. Find the balance that suits your riding style.

Deck

  • Inspect the deck for cracks or delamination after hard impacts or drops. Structural damage to the deck is a safety issue — don't ride a cracked deck.
  • Keep the deck dry. While some boards are water-resistant, prolonged exposure to moisture can damage the deck material and electronics. Dry the board thoroughly if it gets wet.
  • Check grip tape. Worn or peeling grip tape reduces foot control. Replace it when it no longer provides adequate grip.

Remote Control

  • Keep the remote battery charged. A dying remote battery can cause erratic behavior or loss of control. Check the remote charge before every ride.
  • Re-pair the remote if needed. If the remote feels unresponsive or laggy, re-pairing it to the board often resolves the issue. Refer to your model's manual for pairing instructions.
  • Keep the remote dry and protected. Avoid dropping it or exposing it to water.

Motor and Electronics

  • Keep the motor vents clear. Dust and debris can accumulate around hub motors. Use compressed air to clear any buildup.
  • Avoid riding through deep water. Even water-resistant boards have limits. Deep puddles or heavy rain can damage motors and electronics.
  • Check motor wires periodically. Look for any fraying, pinching, or loose connections, especially near the wheel hubs where wires flex during riding.

Before Every Ride: Quick Checklist

  • Battery charged and remote battery checked
  • All wheels spinning freely
  • No loose bolts or hardware
  • Remote paired and responding correctly
  • Deck and grip tape in good condition
